Controversial Masvingo State Minister Shuvai Ben Mahofa, has warned that Mozambican nationals masquerading as refugees, while they are Renamo rebels will be deported without hesitation.
Mahofa who is known for her penchant for controversial remarks said the majority of Mozambican nationals who sought refuge in the Lowveld were Renamo agents. She said such people were a threat to national security and stability. Hundreds of Mozambican nationals have fled from Renamo attacks in that country. However, Mahofa said the government was ready to conduct a thorough vetting exercise and all those suspected of harbouring Renamo motives would be deported. “We were instructed to warn you over the issue of these Mozambican nationals. Some of them are insinuating sinister motives so the government will not hesitate to deport them. There is a possibility that Renamo bandits might take advantage of the situation to cause havoc in the country. We know that some of them are genuine refugees but we have to keep our eyes wide open,” said Mahofa.
Mahofa warned the government would not compromise national security by harbouring Renamo elements among the refugees. It is understood over 300 hundred Mozambican nationals have fled from their country in the wake of heightening tension caused by Renamo forces.
