For the first time, the Mozambican flag was hoisted in a world boxing championship, when yesterday (Thursday 19-05) Alcinda Panguane won an unprecedented silver medal for her country and for Southern Africa.
After defeating former (2016) world champion Valentina Khalzova in the semis, the Mozambican boxer yesterday entered the ring fearless and in attack mode, but was surprised by some well-aimed strikes from Irish Lisa O’Rourke, who won the first round in the evaluation of three out of the five judges.
At the beginning of the second round, Panguana continued to attack but the European under-22 champion’s good footwork and two accurate left jabs again earned her the decision of three of the five judges in another split 3-2 decision.
O’Rourke kept attacking and won the final round 4-1, becoming the world champion in the 66-70 kg category.
At the age of 28, Alcinda Helena Panguene won the silver medal and became world runner-up, flying the Mozambican flag high in Turkey.
The Mozambican delegation will return next Monday with two podium places, Rady Gramani, having won the bronze medal in the 70-75 kg category.
The two Mozambican boxers will now be on the route to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
