The Mozambican police detained a 39-year-old woman in Beluluane, near Maputo, on Sunday, for allegedly deceiving 15 people with false promises of work in South Africa, a police source has told Lusa.
Provincial police spokesman Fernando Manhiça said the suspect convinced the victims, men aged 28 to 36, that they would take up job openings in neighbouring South Africa.
The victims paid her for the work placement and for documentation for the trip, but once they arrived in South Africa they found themselves on their own, they reported.
Finding that the supposed opportunities did not exist, the men submitted a complaint to the South African authorities, who contacted the Mozambican police.
The suspect is being held at the Beluluane police station, and Mozambican authorities are handling the repatriation of the 15 men still in South Africa, Manhiça said.
