WenaData wins SeedStars Maputo

WenaData, a surveys and opinion polls platform, has won the fourth edition of the SeedStars Maputo emerging markets start-up competition held last Friday at Standard Bank’s business incubator.
WenaData collects data from surveys and opinions polls and makes it available to interested institutions for use in decision-making. WenaData users also register and participate in polls or surveys, contributing to development.
Representing WenaData, Luís Fernando said the award was the result of hard work by his team. “I’m very happy, I still cannot believe we won. This is the result of the hard work done by our team, to whom I dedicate this prize,” he said.
Fernando said Seedstars was a vector of development in Mozambique, with participating start-ups presenting solutions that would contribute to socioeconomic growth.
As the winner of the fourth edition of the competition, Wena Data will represent Mozambique at the SeedStars regional summit in November in Tanzania and at SeedStars World in April 2019 in Switzerland, where it will compete with start-ups from around the world for the prize of half a million US dollars.
The fourth edition of SeedStars Maputo was supported by Standard Bank, which is committed to creating a sustainable ecosystem that favours the emergence of entrepreneurs and ensures that they have access to the resources they need to develop.
Standard Bank’s director of Information and Communication Technologies, Cláudio Banze, said that his bank backed the platform because “we believe that small and medium-sized enterprises and start-ups are the vehicle that will boost Mozambique’s growth”.
In this year’s competition, the top three awards went to WenaData, Umbrella (road assistance solution and insurance policy management) and Agro Link (agricultural value chain connection platform).
