Today, on International Day for Older Persons, President Filipe Nyusi has addressed a message of greeting to all elderly people.
“On this occasion, we greet all the elderly women and men in our country, to whom we express our gratitude and admiration for the contribution they have made and continue to make to the well-being of their families and the development of the country,” the statement sent to O Pais reads.
Presidente Nyusi also commended the community, civil society and philanthropic organisations and government institutions for working to promote and defend the rights of the elderly.
“As a government, we have carried out various actions targeting the protection and socioeconomic inclusion of the elderly, with the emphasis on actions to implement the social security policy and the basic social security system,” the president added.
Nyusi says that, despite the efforts being made, the government is still concerned about social exclusion of the elderly within families and in society in general, and urges all Mozambicans to respect the elderly people as a source of wisdom and inspiration, and ensure that they enjoy their rights.
“We invite all people 60 years of age and older to continue to make their unconditional contribution to the education of the new generations, transmitting to them the values of respect for others, tolerance, solidarity and patriotism, as indispensable conditions for the promotion of peace and the development of the country. ”
The day is celebrated under the motto “Celebrating Older Human Rights Champions”.
