Eleven houses belonging to an equal number of families are on the verge of collapsing because of coastal erosion in the city of Beira’s plush Ponta Gea neighbourhood.
Coastal erosion in the area is a reality. For more than 15 years, residents have done everything to protect their homes, including laying down sandbags and stones and building concrete barriers in an attempt to prevent the sea’s relentless advance.
The families say that, if nothing is done, their homes may collapse at any moment.
The masonry put in place by the municipal council to protect the area has proven insufficient, and a major intervention is needed to halt coastal erosion in Beira.
