Dona Esperança lives in the Zona Verde neighbourhood in Matola. For days, the water in her tap has had a strange colour, preventing her drinking it, cooking with it, or even washing white clothes.
This is an experience shared by many other neighbourhood residents, such as stay-at-home mother Gloria Chilengue.
It is unclear if there is any connection, but there are cases of diarrhoea in the Ndlavela Health Centre, which serves the Zona Verde, Dlavela and Infulene D neighbourhoods.
To find out, we asked Augusta Correia, Medical Technician at the health centre.
Maputo Water’s Gildo Timóteo says that, despite the cloudiness, the product is not substandard and is perfectly safe for human consumption.
But Consumer Defence Association representative Mouzinho Nicols says that the Ministry of Health must rule on the matter, as being something affecting public health.
