Mozambique: Terrorists assault Quirimba Island, kill two FDS agents - O País
Mozambique’s Central Anti-Corruption Office (GCCC) today launches its strategic plan, in an event attended by the president, Filipe Nyusi, the agency has announced.
The GCCC plan will be presented after Mozambique dropped six places between 2015 and 2017 in the corruption perception index compiled by Transparency International and presented two weeks ago.
The index grew in 2017 to cover 183 countries, with Mozambique occupying 157th place.
Filipe Nyusi has consistently defended the fight against corruption in his speeches, especially at the XI Congress of the Liberation Front of Mozambique (Frelimo) in September, where he said that this was “the most urgent and vital of all challenges”.
Some corruption cases have been the subject of investigation and others have been tried, but civil society organisations such as Mozambique’s Public Integrity Centre (CIP) are demanding better results.
The CIP points to the lack of accountability in the case of hidden state debts as one of the main causes for the fall in Mozambique’s Transparency International ranking.
At stake is a two billion US dollar debt – about one-eighth of Mozambique’s total GDP at the time (2013 and 2014) – in loans backed by state guarantees issued without legal basis.
“The impact of this case ends up overshadowing any other court case or conviction, due to the magnitude of the case and the attention it has aroused nationally and internationally,” the CIP concludes.
The GCCC 2018-2022 Strategic Plan will be presented this morning in the Armando Emílio Guebuza conference room at the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) in Maputo.
