A programme to combat illegal logging in Mozambique will launch tenders to support timber screening projects this month, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) announced.
The tender is aimed at Mozambican entities with ideas for pilot projects to “research, design and test a timber tracing system in strategic areas”, and “to strengthen communities and civil society” the FAO statement reads.
Grants totalling EUR 100,000 will be available for this phase.
The UN agency is promoting the programme in partnership with Mozambique’s National Directorate of Forests and the European Union.
The program is called the Action Plan for the Application of Legislation, Governance and Trade in the Forestry Sector (FAO-EU FLEGT).
The programme aims, in general, for the country to comply with the standards set by the EU and other countries in the export of timber. A tender for companies or institutions that wanted to receive direct assistance for controlling the timber trade was initially launched.
