As part of international efforts to combat the illegal ivory trade, Mozambique is hosting a National Ivory Action Plan evaluation meeting from today Wednesday to Friday, May 4th
The meeting, to be opened by Minister of Land, Environment and Rural Development, Celso Correia, will evaluate the development and implementation of national action plans and provide an environment for member countries to exchange experiences.
The meeting will also discuss cooperation among competent authorities, cross-border and international cooperation, joint action and resource mobilisation.
About 70 delegates representing various sectors, including justice, defence and security, financial and government, non-governmental organisations, African and Asian countries, will be present at the event.
The annual event is organised by the Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and the International Consortium for Combating Crime against Wildlife (ICCWC) and is supported by the UK government.
Customs authorities in Mozambique seized more than three tonnes of ivory last month, corresponding to at least 430 slaughtered elephants.
