Three suspected shoplifters were shot dead last night on Avenida das Estancias in an exchange of fire with agents of the Republic of Mozambique Police (PRM).
The alleged thieves were driving a Toyota Corolla of the “Skova”, variety, registration number MMR-08-45 and, according to a police source quoted by Jornal Notícias, were taking advantage of the bad weather yesterday night to rob a commercial establishment in central Maputo.
Realising there was a police presence, they tried to make good their escape. During the chase, the would-be thieves opened fire on the police, who responded, eventually killing the three.
Jornal Noticias reports the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) as claiming to have recovered three AK 47 firearms from the vehicle.
This is the second case of alleged criminals shot dead by the police in 24 hours. On Wednesday night, six of a group of nine men travelling in a mini-bus were shot dead by police in Zimpeto.
