Portugal is Mozambique’s biggest shellfish customer, according to the Mozambican National Statistics Institute 2016 data on exports.
Mozambique exported US$38.2 millions’ worth of lobsters, shrimp and related species in the last year, and about a third of the merchandise (36.2 percent) went to Portugal, followed by China (27.5 percent), and Spain (19.5percent).
That is, the Iberian Peninsula was the destination of the majority (55.7 percent) of the product sold abroad. Besides crustaceans, Portugal is a major sugar buyer, importing US$32.6 million in 2016, 42.5 percent in crustaceans and 45.2 percent in sugar.
Although South Africa is Mozambique’s main external business partner, Portugal is one of the top 10 export destinations for Mozambique, and fifth overall in 2016, the same position as in 2015.
In the latest figures, the account amounted to US$305.6 million, spread over about 900 products in a list by value topped by iron and steel for construction, electrical material, books and prints, furniture and components and wine.
The value fell by 33 percent compared to 2015, with imports from Portugal worth US$457 million. In 2016, Mozambique’s worst crisis year, imports in general fell sharply, declining 37.5 percent.
The Mozambican INE figures reflect data collected from official entities such as the Mozambican Tax Authority and customs services, and omit an unknown amount of goods traded illegally, which authorities and companies maintain have strong impact on some economic activities.
