The mayor of Quelimane considers the measure that determines the cessation of his functions “an outrage to democracy”, and says that his loss of mandate “prevents Quelimane citizens from living freely with their choice”.
“It is up to the people of Quelimane to react to these barbarities of a justice that has eyes and is not blind to follow the law.”
Mozambican authorities have determined that Araújo must hand over office to Domingos Albuquerque, president of Quelimane Municipal Assembly, by January 21, as a result of his ineligibility, as decided by the Council of Ministers in 2018.
The matter is addressed in a letter issued on Friday by the Minister of State Administration and Public Administration, Carmelita Nhamashulua, which indicates that the Administrative Court dismissed Araújo’s appeal against the Council of Ministers for lack of legal basis.
Last year, the Council of Ministers determined de Araújo was ineligible because he had decided to run for the October municipal elections as the head of Renamo’s list, not the MDM, which won the elections in 2013.
De Araújo filed an appeal, but, at the end of 2018, the Administrative Court ruled that his complaint did not stand.
Quoted in the publication Carta de Moçambique, the letter by Nhamashulua notes “the loss of the term of President of the Municipal Council of Quelimane Manuel António Alculete Lopes de Araújo, as declared by Decree No. 50/2018 of 29 of August of the Council of Ministers”.
