The UK’s High Commissioner in Maputo held this Tuesday the official farewell ceremony for students selected for the most prestigious UK government master’s scholarship – Chevening. The ceremony featured speeches by the British High Commissioner, Her Excellency Helen Lewis and the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Her Excellency Daniel Nivagara.
The Chevening is the most prestigious international scholarship programme of the British Government. Funded by the Department of Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs and partner organizations, these scholarships are awarded to individuals from all backgrounds who demonstrate leadership potential, the commitment and skills needed to create positive change in their home countries.
Ten Mozambicans have been selected for the academic year 2024-2025 which will soon start in the UK. For the current year, Mozambican scholarship students will pursue their master’s degree studies in several areas, including law, health, food security, energy transition, cybersecurity, development, architecture and finance.
In her opening speech, the British High Commissioner in Maputo – Her Excellency Helen Lewis said:
“For 40 years, the UK government has awarded the Chevening scholarship. The Chevening Scholarships represent the enthusiasm and dynamism of Mozambican youth, a milestone in the historic partnership between Mozambique and the UK in different fields.”
The Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education – His Excellency Daniel Nivagara said:
“The young people who will soon leave for the UK, as well as many others who will follow and those already returned to the country, in the framework of the implementation of the Chevening Programme, once they have graduated, will contribute to a of the growth and socio-economic development of our country, a basic condition for the creation of the much-desired social welfare.”
The Chevening scholarship offers full financial support for beneficiaries to study in any eligible Master’s degree at different UK universities, which gives access to some of the best quality educational institutions in the world, Exclusive exchange opportunities and the chance to explore the UK’s diverse culture. Since its establishment, more than 300 Mozambican students have received the Chevening Scholarship.
