The country’s capacity for prevention and response to cholera has been bolstered by a donation of more than 4,000 vaccine doses by the Egyptian Development Partnership Agency.
The donation comes at a time when health authorities are improving preparation and readiness actions to prevent the outbreak of the disease during the upcoming rainy and cyclonic season.
The country has not recorded any new cases of cholera for over 30 days, but it needs to continue investing in prevention, including vaccinating populations in areas most prone to cases of the disease, also known as the “Dirty Hands” disease.
According to Haitham Shousha, from the Egyptian Embassy in Maputo, the donation delivered to the Ministry of Health (MISAU) reflects the strength of bilateral relations of fraternity, friendship and mutual assistance.
“These ties date back to the shared history of the two countries, when Egypt supported Mozambique in the fight for independence and now in overcoming common challenges,” he said.
Shousha indicated that a second batch of medical aid from Egypt, comprising more vaccines and medical supplies, would arrive in the country in the coming days.
Since October 2023, Mozambique has recorded 16,544 cases of cholera, with 38 deaths, corresponding to a fatality rate of 0.2%. In the same period, 12,880 people were hospitalized, most of whom were later discharged.
With the exception of the city of Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane, all Mozambican provinces have recorded cases of cholera.
