Mozambique: Meet Vovó Cecília, who runs a mobile library in Mafalala at the age of 75 - Watch
More than 150 experts from Europe, America, Asia, Africa and Mozambique meet in Maputo on Monday and Tuesday to discuss the challenges and advantages of electronic personal identification documents.
The event takes place at a time when only six million of the 26 million Mozambicans have a biometric identity card. To encourage people to get the document, the National Civil Identification Directorate has been requiring it for the issuance of other documents, such as passports.
“Many services today require people to present the biometric identity card. It is more reliable and secure. Citizens should exchange the previous identity card for the new one,” Domingos Jofane, National Director of Civil ID, said.
The event was attended by the Minister of the Presidency and Administrative Modernisation of Portugal, who said that the digitization of public services only has advantages when it offers citizens simplicity.
It is the first time the EID conference has taken place in Africa, hence the motto “Transforming Africa Governance Electronics, Electronic identification schemes, Interoperability and Integration.”
