Two attempts to refloat the grounded dredger “Macúti”, stranded in the access port of Beira channel following a collision with the Panamanian freighter “Chiara” roughly three months ago, have failed, leaving the technical team involved in the operation pondering other ways to shift the vessel.
Sofala provincial directorate of Transport and Communications spokesman Hélcio Canda said on Wednesday that “we will have more technical developments aimed at the withdrawal of the beached vessel in the near future”.
Canda stated that various attempts had been made since the dredger ran aground in June, in the expectation of refoating it within 15 days, but the first approach at refloating, starting with the removal of sludge and water, failed due to what he called the vessel’s “nesting levels”.
“Another possible method is pressure, after the plugging of existing cracks in the vessel, but this may cause more damage to the dredger, raising repair costs. We have currently assembled a team of experts in ways of resolving these types of strandings, who will hopefully decide on the necessary technique in the coming days,” Canda said.
He added that giving a time frame for the refloating of the dredger would be inappropriate at this point, given that both initial attempts had failed.
