The Chinese technicians undertaking the rehabilitation of the Save River bridge linking the central and southern parts of Mozambique will arrive in the country within days.
The rehabilitation project will replace the support cables installed when the bridge was built in the 70s.
According to Radio Moçambique, the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, João Machatine, who visited the site last Friday, said that 60 percent of the material needed for the rehabilitation of the bridge was already on site.
Currently, the last stages of the construction of approaches to the metal bridge which will serve as an alternative for traffic during the rehabilitation of the main bridge are underway.
Minister Machatine said that traffic would be diverted from November.
The Save Bridge was designed in the early 1960s by the late engineer Edgar Cardoso and opened on 16 September, 1972.
It is a suspension and reinforced concrete bridge with three spans of 210 metres and two of 110 metres, which has a total length of 810 metres, and has a 7.20 metre carriageway and 1.35 metres sidewalks.
The bridge sees daily average traffic of 240 to 300 mostly heavy goods vehicles.
