Kempton Park Court judge Sagra Subrayen has adjourned to tomorrow hearing on the future of former Finance Minister Manuel Chang who has been in detention for over a week.
After the recess granted by the court, hearing resumed, with the defense and the Public Prosecutor’s Office arguing on whether Manuel Chang may or may not get bail in South Africa to await extradition in freedom.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office says for the crimes that Chang is accused of, he must pay a five-scale guarantee, one of the highest so far.
But the defense has opposed the prosecution’s proposal, saying scale five bail should not be applied in this case due to a legal review made to the device that determines what the Public Prosecution requires.
When it was expected that the Court would announce the decision, the judge asked the prosecutor and the defense lawyer about their willingness to have hearing continue tomorrow and they agreed.
Moreover, it was clear during today’s hearing that the Court does not see any impediments to the extradition of Chang, saying it is only necessary that the US courts comply with the documentary formalities for this to happen.
