At least 25 people died as a result of accidents on Mozambique’s road during the past week, with a further 49 victims suffering mild to severe injuries.
Police spokesman Inacio Dina told reporters that during the period in question, the traffic authorities recorded 13 cases of pedestrians being run over, 10 of vehicles leaving the road, and a number of crashes involving cars and motorcycles.
Excess speed, poor pedestrian behaviour and irregular overtaking were the most frequently cited causes. Traffic police also confiscated 87 driver’s licences and 58 registration certificates for various irregularities.
The Ministry of Transport and Communications notes that road accidents in Mozambique occur most frequently between 15:00 p.m. and 21:00 p.m. on weekends in Maputo and in Maputo, Sofala and Nampula provinces.
The people involved are predominantly young and adults aged between 18 and 45 years, predominantly male.
Mozambique has the fourth-highest number of road accidents in the Southern African Development Community, with 32 deaths per 100,000 cars.
Dina said that, as recently as last week, 35 individuals were arrested for driving illegally and nine others for attempting to bribe traffic police. The individuals concerned offered amounts ranging from 100 to 400 meticais to have the charges against them written off, he said.
Dina noted that a further 164 people had fallen into the hands of the corporation “for committing various common crimes”.
