A total of 164 teachers were dismissed in Mozambique over the last 12 months for various reasons, the main one being suspected sexual harassment, Minister of Education and Human Development Conceita Sortane has revealed.
As well as sexual harassment, falsification of certificates and misappropriation of funds are prominent among the reasons for dismissal.
“We remain vigilant in identifying professionals who behave in a dubious manner,” Minister Sartone is quoted by daily Noticias as saying.
“Our government supports an education system that promotes the transmission of values. The teachers must exemplify these values and distance themselves from behaviour that undermines the sector’s good standing,” she added.
Of the total number dismissed, 124 were removed on sexual harassment grounds.
