Marracuene district administrator Juvêncio Mutacate said yesterday during a working visit by Maputo governor Raimundo Diomba that production in Marracuene district, Maputo province, amounted to 4.5 million meticais last year, a 124 percent increase on 2016.
Mutacate said tourism had contributed most to the results, benefiting from the opening of the bridge to Macaneta, which has attracted both nationals and foreigners to the beaches and resorts in the area.
From January to now, 1.7 million meticais were collected, 15.4 percent of the 11.2 million meticais and down 17.16 percent on 2017.
As far as the education and human development sector is concerned, the district currently has 66 primary and secondary schools, compared to the 55 that existed in the academic year 2017, representing growth of around 3.1 percent.
A total of 69,548 students were enrolled, of whom 58,648 study in conventional classrooms and 43,212 sit in desks, which corresponds to 73 percent coverage as regards school furniture.
Mutacate said 44 classrooms were under construction in an effort to reduce the number of children who are still studying outdoors in an effort to improve teaching and learning conditions.
He said that this year 1,669 school desks were allocated, benefiting 9,764 students. The current deficit is in the order of 4,905 units.
Regarding health, Mutacate indicated that 2,307 cases of malaria were registered against 3,867 in 2017, representing a decrease of 40 percent, and no deaths.
Five hundred and fifteen cases of diarrhoea were reported, and veterinary authorities recorded 59 dog-bite cases, up 20.4 percent.
