On the death of Mozambican journalist João Chamusse - Carta de Moçambique
Health authorities in Mozambique are reporting an increase in cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in areas where extractive industry projects are under way.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is the obstruction of air passage in the lungs, usually caused by smoking or other harmful compounds.
To mitigate the situation, the Ministry of Health (MISAU), in coordination with the Manhiça Foundation, yesterday launched a project aimed at monitoring and improving health in the extractive industry.
The deputy national director of public health at the Ministry of Health, Benigna Matsinhe, said the provinces of Nampula and Tete had more cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Matsinhe indicated that the health sector is monitoring the health of people working in the extractive industry and of communities where the projects are taking place, appealing to the managers of companies operating in the area to take hygiene and safety measures seriously.
