A tense atmosphere reigns in downtown Maputo today, Friday 13, as informal street vendors revolt against the ban on sidewalk and roadside trading, Miramar reports.
The vendors barricaded the streets, preventing the circulation of vehicles with garbage containers and other objects, and municipal police, reinforced by the PRM, responded by firing shots in the air.
The traders say they are willing to stop selling on the sidewalks, but insist that Maputo City Council names the market where they are to continue their activities.
The municipality says that there are 4,000 stalls and kiosks available in various municipal market.
“That doesn’t correspond to the truth,” Job Mutombene, a representative of the Maputo City Association of Informal Vendors, says. “If there are such stalls, the municipality should show them to us, so that we can occupy them,” he stresses.

The owners of some commercial establishments have chosen to close their businesses as a result of the unrest.
