The city of Vilankulo in Inhambane hosted the first public hearing on Tuesday regarding the pre-feasibility consultation to define the scope of the environmental impact study for the construction of the Mapinhane/Pafuri Road, which will extend to neighbouring South Africa.
This road, approximately 600 kilometres long, will connect Mozambique, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. Called the Mapinhane/Pafuri Development Corridor (CODEMAPA), the project will be executed through a public-private partnership.
Initially projected to connect to the National Road Number One from Mapinhane, updated
studies indicate that it may instead connect from Mavandza to facilitate access to the deep-water port that will be built on the Belane coast.
Representing RMS Consultores, the company responsible for conducting the environmental
impact study, Renato Mazivila said the study would begin in the first half of 2025.
Abdul Razaque, president of the Inhambane Business Council, said that the business
community was eagerly awaiting the results and the possible implementation of the road
project.
Tiago Merione, director of the provincial environmental service, expressed confidence that, with the province´s experience in resettlement processes, the consultant would deliver quality work.
