A bus carrying athletes, coaches and managers from Mocímboa da Praia district, who were returning from the city of Pemba where they had been participating in school games in the provincial capital, was held up by terrorists for just over half an hour in the district of Muidumbe last Thursday afternoon (21-12).
An Ikweli source who was on board the bus said that the vehicle was intercepted between the villages of Xitunda and Xinda, the latter in the district of Mocímboa da Praia.
The group of terrorists greeted the occupants of the vehicle, questioning them about their origin and destination, as well as whether they held the Muslim religion.
The same sources said that they did not display hostile behaviour, so much so that they told citizens that “you are in the right hands, you don’t need to worry”.
A tense moment occurred when one of the group leaders tried to use his cell phone, the terrorists suspecting he was taking photos.
“Initially, we thought they were our troops,” one of the passengers said, explaining that the terrorists were wearing the same military uniforms as the Rapid Reaction Force. “We even thought they were Rwandans, because the uniform is similar to that of the Rwandans,” another source noted.
The bus was released after the terrorists contacted a superior who authorized the trip to continue.
In addition to the eight terrorists who boarded the vehicle, an further unspecified number were suspected to be in the near vicinity.
