Teachers claim that Prime Minister Adriano Maleiane wasn’t honest when he stated that over 70 percent of these professionals have already received payment for overtime hours. The class threatens to halt activities starting next Friday.
The dissatisfaction among teachers continues, even after the Government, during the opening of the session of questions to the Government in the Assembly of the Republic, stated that over 70 percent have had payment for overdue overtime hours for over a year.
The National Association of Teachers (ANAPRO) stated that it was all a lie because, according to its representative, only two out of the 13 months were paid, covering only thirty percent of the debt.
“We heard a lie as big as the world. So, this leaves us increasingly frustrated. Just to give an example, in the districts that the province of Gaza has, they only paid in three. Now, what are these 70 percent that the prime minister referred to?” questioned Isac Marrengula, president of ANAPRO, appealing to the government’s common sense.
Six days is the time given by the teachers to the Government for the payment of overtime hours and the resolution of all their concerns.
If not, there will be only one solution: “If by next Friday the Government does not speak out, does not make the due payment, we will have no choice but to call for a nationwide halt to classes.”
Dressed in white gowns, members of the National Association of Teachers called the press on Saturday and complained of intimidation and death threats.
“We express our rights, we are persecuted, we are expelled, in some cases, we receive death threats for demanding our rights. Now, if the Constitution provides space for protest and we cannot, what should we do?”
In addition to the delay in the payment of overtime hours, teachers contest the overcrowding of classrooms and demand better working conditions.
