More than six hundred people from the village of Nhamississua, an administrative post of Dombe in the district of Sussundenga, Manica province, have just benefited from potable water through the construction of a water supply system in that region of central Mozambique.
It is a multi-purpose system with the capacity to store thirty thousand liters of water, equipped with a laundry facility and a drinking trough for animals. It also includes a greenhouse for vegetable cultivation and the development of other activities that will benefit the local population.
The system was built as an initiative of the Post-Cyclone Reconstruction Office (GREPOC) and the non-governmental organization SOLIDAR SUÍÇA.
The governor of Manica province, Francisca Tomás, who inaugurated the system on Friday (19), without disclosing the amount disbursed for the project, stated that it solves the problem of lack of water supply sources for that population.
She mentioned that the operation of the water source puts an end to the problem of human-wildlife conflict, at a time when the population was vulnerable to attacks by crocodiles and hippos when fetching water from the rivers.
“We have here in Dombe the Lucite River, which passes right by the administrative post headquarters. But the population cannot use that water because of attacks by crocodiles, hippos, and other animals considered dangerous to humans,” said the governor when addressing the population of Dombe.
“The source also has a laundry facility and a drinking trough for animals. The population no longer needs to go to the river to fetch water for consumption or to wash clothes. They can do everything here in this system built with the safety of the population in mind.”
She urged the population to strictly observe individual and collective hygiene measures to prevent diseases caused by dirty hands and waterborne pathogens.
“There is no need for the residents of this community to continue drinking water from the river. You have here a source built by the government and partners. With water suitable for human consumption. Let’s reinforce hygiene measures to prevent disease outbreaks in our community,” she added.
Francisca Tomás stressed the need for beneficiaries to make better use of that infrastructure by improving hygiene and increasing vegetable production.
“Even so, vegetable production can be done here in this location. There is space where the population can grow and irrigate fields through this system. It is a system capable of supplying water to more people. In the first phase, taps are connected to homes,” she explained.
Speaking on the occasion, the residents of Nhamississua saw the distance reduced to reach a water source, besides contributing to the reduction of waterborne diseases.
Doca Manuel, representing the population of Dombe, thanked the government and partners for the construction of the system.
It is worth mentioning that Nhamississua is one of the villages created to accommodate victims of Cyclone Idai, a phenomenon that struck that region of Manica province on March 14, 2019.
