Mozambique’s swimming fraternity will this afternoon (Thursday, February 25) say goodbye to the sport’s national coach, Frederico dos Santos, who died last Saturday when a wall at the entrance of the Zimpeto Olympic pool collapsed at the end of the Maputo Summer Championships.
The funeral will take place at 3.00 p.m. in Lhanguene Cemetery (Mohammedan zone), and will be preceded by a wake at 12 noon in the Swimming Association of Maputo’s Raimundo Franisse pool, where Frederico dos Santos coached his team.
The Moçambola-2016 lottery swimming gala observed a minute’s silence in honor of the swimming coach.
Representing the government, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Ana Flavia Azinheira delivered a message of solidarity to family of the deceased and sporting world in general.
“First, on behalf of the Government and of all Mozambican sports-people, we present our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wish speedy recovery to the injured. It is an event that left us deeply shaken. On the one hand, the way it happened: the inexplicable collapse of a wall of a recent sporting infrastructure and, secondly, because it took the life of an outstanding sportsperson, a man totally devoted to his favourite sport, who proudly gave all his knowledge, formed generations of great athletes and lived intensely and passionately for swimming until the last minute of his life,” she said.
