Mozambique: International NGOs launch conservation project
The city of Maputo recorded its highest temperature for the last 65 years on Saturday: 44.9 degrees Celsius according to the Meteorological Station at Mavalane Airport, reports Notícias.
Based on National Institute of Meteorology weather data recorded between 1951 and 2016, an “almost identical” situation occurred on October 8, 1951, when the temperature reached 44.8 degrees Celsius, the newspaper reports.
The intense heat of last Saturday was the result of an “invasion” of a warm, dry continental air mass from the north to northwest. The air was drawn in by a low pressure system in South Africa, with the persistent winds from the north caused by a sharp drop in air pressure near the southern coast of the continent.
On Saturday evening, a cloud formation caused winds reaching 60 kilometres per hour in parts of Maputo city and province.
According to Notícias, the current El Niño phenomenon, considered by scientists one of the strongest of the century, is responsible for heatwaves and drought in some provinces of the country and the southern part of the African continent generally.
