Mozambique Supreme Court president Adelino Muchanga has demanded “zero tolerance” from magistrates towards perpetrators of crimes against children, saying that the judiciary should be sensitive to the abhorrence of such crimes.
“Our task is to issue a clear message of zero tolerance in cases of gross violation of the rights of the child,” Judge Muchanga said at a national meeting on the protection of the rights of the child on Tuesday.
The judicial system must investigate and prosecute violations of children’s rights with rigour, speed and integrity, with the aim of combating and preventing such crimes in an exemplary manner.
The president of the Mozambican Supreme Court highlighted rape, bodily harm, kidnapping, child labour and non-payment of child support as conduct that must be severely punished.
“A neglected, abused and traumatised child carries a seed of violence which will accompany it into adulthood,” he said.
Muchanga said the country was witnessing the erosion of traditional ties of affection and solidarity, reflected in the increase in legal proceedings, legal guardianship cases and judicial paternity investigations.
