Mozambique’s minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Veronica Macamo and her counterpart from Sao Tome and Principe, Edite Jua, have signed a mutual visa waiver agreement for all types of passports, at a meeting in Maputo.
Speaking on Monday, Verónica Macamo said the agreement will boost economic cooperation and ties between the peoples of Mozambique and Sao Tome and Principe.
“”The visa waiver could attract more investment and will boost not only the relationship between family and friends, but will also boost tourism, trade and investment in the two countries,” Macamo said.
Sao Tome’s minister of foreign affairs and cooperation said the understanding will boost economic and affective ties between the people of the two countries.
“”This is a symbolic act, because what unites us is historical in nature and in bloodline. The agreement will bring the two countries even closer together, boosting tourism in a faster and less bureaucratic way,” Edite Jua said.
Mozambique and Sao Tome and Principe are part of the Portuguese-speaking African Countries (PALOP) and the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), with a common past of colonisation by Portugal.
As a result of detention, exile and deportation policies practised by the Portuguese colonial regime, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe [as other PALOP countries] have as residents descendants of migrants originating from both countries.
