The country’s second-largest political party, which is led by Ossufo Momade, has accused Mozambique’s state Defence and Security Forces of murdering defenceless citizens, including sone of its own members, in the province of Cabo Delgado. Renamo spokesperson José Manteigas also alleges that the police have been violating the State of Emergency in its performance.
Renamo called a press conference this Thursday to denounce alleged violence and abuse by the Defence and Security Forces of citizens across almost all of the country, highlighting alleged murders in the province of Cabo Delgado.
According to Renamo spokesperson José Manteigas, the murders took place on 12 and 16 April.
“A vessel transporting people and goods from Pemba to Ibo was intercepted by members of the Mozambican Defence Forces. After a mock interrogation, they dragged the vessel under the quay bridge and fired on the occupants, which causing the death of several fellow citizens.
“In Ilha do Ibo, members of the Armed Forces of Defence of Mozambique shot at a boat with three occupants coming from Palma, which resulted in the death of two, namely Muemede Ali Mbaile and Bachir Muemede Cudeda. The vessel’s owner and crew member, Amade Culanda, survived this macabre act.”
Manteigas added that the FADM went to a restaurant owned by Selemane Idi in the district of Ibo, where they expelled the establishment’s security guard and broke down the door before consuming alcoholic drinks and looting foodstuffs.
Manteigas also raised complaints from the population of Bairro de Paquitequete, in the city of Pemba, for alleged violence by the FDS, and expressed general concern about the actions of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique.
“PRM’s mode of action is still very worrying in this period of quarantine and the State of Emergency throughout the country. Agents of this corporation murder defenceless citizens in broad daylight, for no plausible reason, as happened some days ago in the city of Beira. In addition to this heinous crime, the same police make arrests on vague pretexts while curiously turning a blind eye to other, egregious violations of the state of emergency,” Mantegas said.
Faced with these situations, “If the police kill, the military kill and the insurgents kill, who will protect them?” Renamo asked. “Sadly, and regrettably, the police spokesman conceals these and other criminal acts, which more than anything resemble those of the insurgents.”
The Renamo spokesman calls on the Commander-in-Chief of the Defence and Security Forces to act to stop the alleged murders.
