Clarification of cases involving the violation of the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens must be undertaken with the greatest speed and transparency, in order to encourage victims and discourage the number of such cases.
Such was the challenge launched by President Nyusi yesterday, when three new members of the National Commission on Human Rights (CNDH) elected according to parliamentary representation by the Assembly of the Republic, were sworn into office.
The candidates are Cidália Chaúque Oliveira, Alfredo Caetano Dias and Augusto Mateus.
In his speech, President Nyusi said victims must be heard, and cooperate with various entities to produce evidence to help clarify the cases and hold perpetrators to account.
“For the Commission to remain a credible partner, it must fulfil its mission in an independent, transparent and swift manner. Speed in clarifying cases, as well as encouraging victims, will discourage the multiplication of acts of this nature,” he said.
Nyusi stated that the new officials were taking p their pots at a difficult time for the country, characterised by the incidence of the Covid-19 pandemic, post-cyclone Idai and Kenneth recovery, and attacks by armed men in the Central region and insurgents in some districts of Cabo Delgado province.
These situations, he Head of State said, called into question basic human rights such as the right to life, physical integrity, as well as freedom of conscience, religion and worship.
“In difficult times like the one we are going through, we are obliged to adopt robust measures to defend our sovereignty and territorial integrity, and ensure the maintenance of public order and tranquillity. Some of these measures, dear compatriots, may involuntarily lead to the violation of human rights,” he added.
The president recommended analysing the hody’s performance, since its creation, and reflecting on its functional model, identifying the positive aspects and those that need improvement, as well as coming closer to the beneficiaries and working as a link between the victims and the authorities.
“We hope that you will become a vehicle that promotes respect for coexistence and tolerance, bringing people together and consolidating democracy in a multifaceted society like ours,” he said.
