President Filipe Nyusi will preside over the closing ceremony of the 40th Basic Course of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) at the Matalane Police Training School in Maputo province.
“The course now completed is part of the Government’s efforts to train police officers, with a view to guaranteeing and maintaining public order and security, as well as the free movement of people and goods throughout the national territory,” a note from the Presidency reads.
The Matalane Police Practical School has been in the spotlight in Mozambique for the past few weeks, after it became known that instructors there are suspected of having made 15 trainees at the institution pregnant.
The case was made public two weeks ago, when an order from PRM commander-general Bernardino Rafael initiating disciplinary proceedings against instructors suspected of being involved circulated on social media.
The document sees Bernardino Rafael ordering the suspension of the instructors and sending the young women concerned home pending their re-enrolment after childbirth.
The case caused great indignation on social networks, and several Mozambican civil society organisations have demanded the accountability of the instructors who impregnated the young candidates.
Speaking to Lusa on Monday, Mozambican ombudsman Isaque Chande lamented the events reported, also demanding that those at fault be held responsible.
“This is a major setback in the lives of these girls and of their families, who normally place hope in their children. I believe that many of them come from poor families. It is very unfortunate because, when this happens, it affects the girls’ future,” Chande said.
