The education sector receives around €10 million a year from Finland – 70% of the total support that the European country provides to Mozambique.
Finland disburses €15 million in support to Mozambique annually, according to the country’s outgoing ambassador to Mozambique, Laura Tórvinen.
“In general terms, we make €15 million available to all sectors in which we are involved, but €10 million goes to the education sector, with the emphasis on primary education,” she said.
Ambassador Torvinen said that, as a result of the cooperation, particularly in the fields of bilingual education and teacher training, access to education for children, and especially girls, had increased.
Although primary education is a priority, Finland has also supported higher education teacher training and research programmes at the Pedagogical and Eduardo Mondlane Universities.
Political affairs, governance and trade relations were also part of bilateral cooperation.
“We work with the Assembly of the Republic, mainly in the area of natural resource management. We work with the Ministry of Finance in the area of economic policy research and research into poverty, in which we work with Eduardo Mondlane University and the Institute of Social and Economic Studies, and we are now starting a programme in the field of inspection,” Ambassador Tórvinen detailed.
Regarding the impact of Covid-19 on education, the ambassador said she understood that it was necessary to safeguard the health of students, teachers and guardians by creating safe conditions for the resumption of classes.
The Finnish ambassador to Mozambique returned home this Saturday, after four years in Mozambique, after saying that new support programmes were being prepared for the next four years, mainly in the areas of education and good governance.
