Mozambican president Filipe Nyusi yesterday became the Number One Honorary Member of the Order of Nurses of Mozambique (OEMO) following an invitation to that effect by the association’s chairperson, Maria Acácia Lourenço.
The invitation was proffered during a meeting between the president and representatives of the OEMO arranged to present the order’s governing body and express its gratitude to the government, under the leadership of the head of state, for the recognition it grants to the nursing profession.
This recognition was evidenced by the approval by the Assembly of the Republic at the end of 2015 of a law establishing the OEMO and its subsequent promulgation by the president in early 2016.
“In response, President Nyusi accepted the invitation made by the health professionals’ association, highlighting the multifaceted role of nurses and the fact that they contribute not only to the provision of health care but also to the in-service training of physicians,” a communiqué issued by the presidency reads.
The nurses used the occasion to publicly reaffirm their commitment to the ethical and deontological duties of the profession, to continue to comply with health sector programmes, providing compassionate healthcare with courtesy, professionalism and quality, so meeting the expectations of the Mozambican people.
Nyusi congratulated the nurses on their achievements reached so far, and especially increasing the levels of training and specialisation of their professionals. The existence of the order facilitated dialogue between nurses and other entities, including the government, he said.
At present, the OEMO is represented in all the country’s provinces. At the meeting, the nurses talked about their plans for growth over the next four years, including having their own facilities, creating an online platform, and establishing partnerships with research organisations.
