A 35-year-old woman and her two-year-old daughter have been found dead in the Xinonanquila neighbourhood in Matola-Rio, showing evidence of physical assault.
The nauseating smell coming from the victims’ home aroused the curiosity of neighbours, who also remarked on the absence of movement for more than a week.
The woman’s ex-husband, a man of Congolese nationality, is cited by neighbours as the main suspect, especially after a contentious divorce in November last year.
According to the PRM spokesperson in Maputo province, Carmínia Leite, when the police went inside the house, furniture was found overturned and the bodies, showing signs of physical aggression, were already in an advanced state of decomposition.
“The bodies of the victims have already been taken to Matola Provincial Hospital,” Leite said, adding that the husband was being detained at Boane General Command, as there were strong indications that he was involved in the death of his ex-wife and daughter. “We will, however, continue our investigations in order to clarify the case,” Leite concluded.
The detained suspect denies all accusations.
