Mozambique has lost 250 million meticais (around US$4.3 million at today’s exchange rate) in the first half of this year as a result of corruption involving civil servants, a spokesman for the Central Office for Combating Corruption (GCCC) has claimed.
The corruption cases involve officials from Mozambican public institutions, some of whom are already facing court cases in the preparatory phase, Cristóvão Mondlane, quoted by daily newspaper Notícias, explained.
Among the main cases are those involving seven municipal presidents, five district administrators, six Board of Directors chairpersons, six permanent secretaries and 15 directors.
Mondlane added that many of these individuals had been involved in the creation of ghost construction companies, with the aim of winning public tenders launched by the entities they run.
