Two men have been arrested in Pemba for attempting to bribe police into freeing colleagues who were detained about a month ago for allegedly participating in an illegal demonstration.
The Chief of Operations of the Pemba 4th Brigade declined the offer of 30,000 Meticais and arrested the two in flagrante delicto.
One of the accused has confessed to the crime, saying he got the idea from a police officer involved in transferred his colleagues to another police station.
Investigations continue, according to police, and in addition to corruption, the two could be charged with public disorder for participating in an illegal demonstration in Pemba.
This is the third time in less than a year that a police officer has blown the whistle on attempts to secure the release of detainees through bribery.
