Mozambique loses to New Zealand, exits winless in FIBA Women World Cup pre-qualifiers

The Mozambican women’s basketball team lost this morning against New Zealand (79-63), in the third round of Group B of the Qualifying Tournament for the FIBA World Championship in Germany-2026, which ends next Sunday (25).

With this defeat, Mozambique lost the chance to qualify for the World Championship in this first qualifying window, after losing in the first two rounds against the host team, Mexico (71-65), and Montenegro (74-52).

According to Desafio, attention now turns to the Afrobasket Qualifying Tournament for Côte d’Ivoire 2025, to be held in Angola in November, bringing together the countries of southern Africa to determine just one representative for the continental competition.

So, the national team still has two opportunities to reach their second World Cup, after their debut in Turkey in 2014.

First, they must win the Afrobasket pre-qualifying tournament in November and then, in the continental competition, win the event or finish in a position to compete in the FIBA World Championship Qualifying Tournament in Germany, 2026.

There will be 24 teams from all over the world at the event, of which two will be the winners of the current pre-qualification tournaments in Mexico and Rwanda, as well as the teams that do well in the continental championships that will take place in the second half of 2025.
