The National Meteorological Institute (INAM) has warned of possible cyclones in Mozambique this rainy season.
Meteorologist Acácio Tembe said that the provinces of Zambézia and Nampula – those most prone to natural phenomena of this nature – could be affected by up to three cyclones.
Tembe explained that the rain falling since Sunday in Maputo and Gaza was the result of low pressures systems coupled with high temperatures, presaging a risk of urban flooding in Maputo and Gaza provinces.
A tour of Maputo’s peripheral neighbourhoods by Radio Mozambique yesterday morning found streets flooded and drainage ditches silted up and unable to drain rainwater.
Residents interviewed expressed their concern and cried out for support from the municipality.
