Mozambique implements fuel marking system to fight smuggling, adulteration

Mozambique is to implement a fuel marking system to prevent smuggling and adulteration, the government announced today in a statement.
“An invisible chemical will be added to all fuels destined for the domestic market, gasoline, diesel and light oil, from five distribution terminals in the cities of Matola, Beira, Nacala, Pemba and Quelimane,” the Mozambican Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (Mireme) statement explains.
Each marker will identify fuels for retail, megaprojects, public works, construction and dredging, as well as agriculture and testing, while mobile laboratories will carry out inspection actions at filling stations and tanker trucks.
The marking system has been in preparation since 2016 by an inter-sector team made up of technicians from Mireme and the Tax Authority and was awarded to the Swiss company Sicpa.
At the time, the ministry, through the National Directorate of Hydrocarbons and Fuels, “harmonised legislation on marking petroleum products and testing them for adulteration”, the statement adds.
