The Mozambican government has demanded criminal liability for those who caused the road accident, which resulted in the death of 13 people, on Friday morning, on the country’s main north-south highway (EN1) in Manhiça district, about 80 kilometres north of Maputo.
“We want to make it clear that what happened is unacceptable and enough is enough”, says a press release from the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), issued on Sunday.
According to the document, the perpetrators must be hold responsible “because we cannot continue passively watching this type of accident, as if it was something normal. Our goal is to solve this situation as soon as possible.
The accident involved a Toyota Hiace passenger vehicle, which crashed violently into a Mercedes Benz heavy goods vehicle.
So far, the data indicate that the probable causes of the accident were irregular overtaking, associated with the high speed of the passenger vehicle. Experts are continuing to analyse with precision what happened.
“Recognizing the seriousness of road accidents in the country, internal work is underway to strengthen measures to prevent and combat traffic accidents, to be announced in the coming days”, announced the Ministry document.
Staff from the National Road Transport Institute (INATRO) and other State institutions went to the scene immediately to provide the necessary support to the victims and their families, as well as to collect information.
For his party, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi condemned the irresponsibility of some drivers and urged all Mozambicans to always be guided by defensive driving.
‘We regret the loss of life of 13 compatriots who prematurely ceased to be among us. We also regret those others who were injured on the eve of the celebration of national independence because of the accident that occurred on Friday”, said Nyusi, during the ceremony marking the 47th anniversary of Mozambican independence, held in Maputo on Saturday.
