Frelimo, the ruling Mozambican party, said Thursday that there is “encouraging news” in the fight against armed groups operating in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, defending a global cooperation against “terrorism”.
“We have news of the increasing number of neutralisations and liquidations of the terrorists who are trying to seize our wealth in Cabo Delgado,” said the head of the Frelimo parliamentary delegation, Sergio Pantie.
Sérgio Pantie was speaking on behalf of the party’s parliamentary bench, in the opening speech of the third session of the 9th parliamentary term, today in Maputo.
The MP stressed that defence and security forces (FDS) have been fighting against the armed groups carrying out attacks in Cabo Delgado.
“We want to salute the bravery of thousands of young people who have fought victorious battles against the terrorists in Cabo Delgado,” he said.
Sérgio Pantie described the armed violence in the province as “terrorism” and defended global cooperation against the phenomenon.
Armed violence in the northern province of Mozambique, which is home to the largest private multinational investment in Africa, to exploit natural gas, is causing a humanitarian crisis with over two thousand deaths and 560,000 people displaced, without housing or food, concentrated mainly in the provincial capital, Pemba.
Some of the incursions have been claimed by the ‘jihadist’ group Islamic State since 2019.
