Mozambique: Chissano calls for a return to ideals of the liberation struggles - Watch
The Episcopal Commission for Justice and Peace, a body of Catholic bishops, said on Monday that the re-run of the municipal election of November 22 in Marromeu was characterised by “worse arbitrariness” than the first vote.
“The repetition of the vote in Marromeu, held on November 22 last, did not restore the credibility of the electoral process, resulting in worse arbitrariness,” a statement distributed by the commission claims.
The Catholic bishops consider that the Marromeu re-run process was marred by the forging of result sheets in the absence of Renamo and MDM members.
“This shows a clear disregard for the decision of the Constitutional Council to re-run the elections in a clear and transparent manner,” the pastoral letter reads.
The commission urges the relevant institutions to work towards the restoration of order and justice in electoral results and to the exemplary punishment of those responsible.
Frelimo won the election in the town of Marromeu by 46 votes.
The vote was repeated at eight voting stations following the invalidation of the results by the Constitutional Council due to irregularities.
