Mozambique’s Economic Climate Indicator (ICE) registered a “tenuous” recovery in October after five months in decline, according to the latest bulletin from the Mozambican National Statistics Institute (INE), consulted by Lusa.
The index rose to 95.7 from 95.5 in September. The first reported value for September was 96.3, revised later with late responses from economic agents to the indicator’s baseline survey.
“Entrepreneurs’ confidence in the Mozambican economy, expressed by the Economic Climate Indicator (ICE), interrupted the downward trajectory it had been witnessing since May,” the INE report states.
Nevertheless, “the respective balance remained below the average of the respective chronological series”.
The INE notes that “the recovery of ICE, in a tenuous fashion, counted on the contributions of employment and demand perspectives that increased slightly in the same month of reference”.
“In terms of sectors, the favourable economic environment in October made a positive assessment in all sectors targeted by the survey, except the construction sector, which includes public works, which registered a negative evaluation,” it concludes.
The Confidence and Economic Climate indicators are a monthly publication on the economic situation in Mozambique, compiled on the basis of a business survey of non-financial sector companies conducted monthly by the INE.
“The study expresses the opinion of economic agents about the evolution and perspective of their activity, particularly on employment, demand, orders, prices, production, sales and activity limitations,” the body explains.
