More than 200,000 cashew seedlings in the Mozambican Almond Institute nursery in Nanduli, Ancuabe district, Cabo Delgado, are at risk of being lost because the workforce there fled after the June 5th terrorist attack.
The nursery, located about 70 km from the district headquarters village, was visited this morning by the Secretary of State in Cabo Delgado, António Supeia, who took the opportunity to advise the Almond Institute of Mozambique on ways to avoid losing the seedlings.
“Think of some alternative solution, and be quick about it,” he advised.

The Mozambican Almond Institute sees two possible solutions to the problem. One is the return of the workforce on the basis of security guarantees; the other is to transfer the seedlings to the Mariri region, where conditions exist for their survival.
The Nanduli nursery, the largest in Cabo Delgado province, can produce more than 700,000 seedlings a year.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Cabo Delgado’s last (2021/2022) cashew harvest was, at more than 24,000 tons, the second largest in the country, after Nampula’s 82,000 tons.
A month after the attack, the Secretary of State for #CaboDelgado visited the completly depopulated village of #Nanduli in #Ancuabe
