Maputo is from today hosting the seventh edition of the Kinani festival, a contemporary dance platform that brings together 14 countries to “exalt artistic freedom” through contemporary dance.
“The idea is to promote contemporary dance” while changing ideas about performance spaces, director general of the festival Quito Tembe told Lusa.
The programme boasts 50 international choreographers, among them the Portuguese Vera Mantero.
“It will be a gathering of professionals from almost everywhere, who find artistic elements in common,” Tembe explains.
There will be a total of 25 performances over the week, presented in the main cultural centres of Maputo including the Museum of Fishing and the Franco-Mozambican Cultural Centre.
There will also be a presentation in an abandoned building in the centre of the capital.
“Our intention is to bring contemporary dance to unconventional locations, showing people that art is possible anywhere,” Tembe says.
This year’s festival will prioritise the mixing of elements of traditional Mozambican arts with contemporary dance.
