Bay of Maputo crossings are still under restrictions due to the breakdown of the Ka Mpfumu ferry, with smaller boats the alternative for foot passengers.
The Mpfumo ferry remained at its mooring for the fourth consecutive day yesterday. The vessel’s owner said repairs would take only one day, but the reality seems to be that we are facing a major breakdown.
With vehicle crossings suspended, life in Katembe is more expensive. Smaller boats appear to be the only alternative. The Bagamoyo vessel has been out of action for much longer, with workers saying the breakdown of the second vessel is creating disruption and that the only information they have is that a new part is needed.
Our reporter talked to mechanics working on the vessel, who confirmed that the malfunction was serious. To make matters worse, on windy days such as Tuesday, work on repairs was still harder.
Indeed, the finishing of the Maputo-Katembe Bridge seems to be the only solution to the vessels’ periodic breakdowns.
